Surface Preparation Technical Requirements

Oil and Grease Removal
To remove oil, grease, and dirt from metal surfaces, use organic solvents such as white spirit or trichloroethylene for wiping, or employ alkaline degreasers for cleaning.
Ultrasonic cleaning equipment can also be used to aid in oil removal, ensuring the surface is free of oil residues.
Rust Removal
For surfaces with light rust, manual or power tools like wire brushes and sandpaper can be used to grind away rust.
For heavily corroded surfaces, sandblasting is recommended to thoroughly remove rust layers, oxide scales, and other impurities, achieving a certain level of surface roughness to enhance paint adhesion. After sandblasting, the surface should meet the Sa2.5 grade or higher, meaning it should be free of visible grease, dirt, oxide scales, rust, and old paint coatings, with any remaining marks being only slight specks or streaks.
Surface Cleaning
Use clean compressed air or a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the surface after rust removal. Alternatively, wipe with a clean soft cloth or solvent to ensure the surface is free of dust and debris, providing a clean base for subsequent painting.
Surface Roughness Treatment
Surface roughness is typically controlled through sandblasting or shot blasting. The appropriate roughness range is usually between 30-75μm, which can be measured using a roughness gauge.
Drying Treatment
The treated surface should be thoroughly dried, with surface moisture content generally required to be below 8%. Moisture on the surface can affect paint adhesion, leading to issues such as blistering and peeling of the coating.
Drying methods include natural air drying, hot air blowing, or infrared lamp drying, with drying time varying based on environmental temperature and humidity as well as the surface treatment method. If chemical treatment is used, rinse with clean water and dry to prevent moisture retention that could cause blistering and peeling of the paint layer.
Avoiding Secondary Contamination
The treated surface should be protected from re-exposure to oil, dust, and other contaminants. If temporary storage is necessary, protective measures such as covering with plastic film should be taken.
